Jennifer Lee and Frank Bean (2010), for example, investigated how racial and ethnic boundaries in the United States are changing because of increasing racial-ethnic intermarriage, increases in the number of Americans identifying as multiracial, and changing patterns of immigration.
They also found that structural factors like the level of racial-ethnic diversity in a community influenced rates of intermarriage and the likelihood of residents identifying as multiracial.
Racial homogamy continues to be the norm in the United States, although racial intermarriage is becoming more common.
High rates of unemployment and incarceration of young Black men in poor communities limit the supply of eligible spouses for heterosexual Black women in those communities (who have low rates of intermarriage with men of other racial-ethnic groups).
The marriage market can also help explain increasing rates of racial intermarriage.
