In returning over and over to realistic depiction of a situation in which a trauma occurred, dreams are 'endeavouring to master the stimulus retrospectively, by developing the anxiety whose omission was the cause of the traumatic neurosis' (Freud 1920: 32).
It is therefore 'impossible to classify as wish fulfilments' the dreams which occur in either the 'traumatic neurosis' or the 'dreams during psychoanalyses which bring to memory' the physical trauma ot childhood' (Freud 1920: 32).
Stated more classically, the psychoanalytic process fosters the development and resolution of a transference neurosis, and it is this process which is the fundamental concern of the analyst.
These he called the actual neuroses,3 in contradistinction to the psychoneuroses proper-such as hysteria and obsessional neurosis.
It is necessary to comment on the concept of "actual neurosis".
