We review ontological and concep- tual views on open strategy (Section 3), before developing a practice view on open strategy based on the re-analysis of cases in the literature (Section 4). A philosophical view concerns the ontological and epistemological assumptions of a publication (i.e. Their ontological and epistemological views are implied by the way in which authors talk and argue about open strategy as well as how they structure their analyses and present their findings. The process view considers socio-technical activities over time but, in most cases, exhibits much of the same ontological assumptions as the entity view. In the practice view, practices have ontological primacy: they are the nexus of agency, routines, context knowledge (Cook and Brown, 1999; Orlikowski, 2002) and material artefacts (Hafermalz and Riemer, 2015; Orlikowski, 2002).

For example, if the claim " past time is infinite" (which, on its surface, may not appear to be contradictory) can be shown to be an intrinsic and ontological contradiction, then the statement " past time is infinite" must also be considered an impossible state of affairs. With respect to the above example, if the proposition " past time is infinite" results in an in- trinsic and ontological contradiction, then the opposite of that proposition must be true, that is, " past time is finite." Chapter 5 presents an ontological argument for the creation of all past time. The first insight comes from Bernard Lonergan, who uses the notion of ontological conditions to interpret causal schemes of recurrence.3 This view of causation can be applied to the whole range of causal connections (from the simple ex- trinsic collision of billiard balls, to very subtle and indeterminate informa- The second insight comes from quan- tum theory, which gives very lucid examples of the traditional notion of ontological simplicity.،Moreover, there is reason to think that for Suárez efficient causes are also ontologically prior to every other kind of cause. Hence, efficient causes are not only con- ceptually paradigmatic causes insofar as they comply most properly with Suárez's influxus-theory of causation, but they also seem to be ontologically prior to most other kinds of Aristotelian causes. Second, what is their proper way of operation - their 'causality', as Suárez says - ontologically speaking? It is the task of the next section to elucidate what this means from an ontological point of view. cause and the effect," evokes the ontological question as to what this medium or link really is.
