This study showed that by using the criteria of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 25.4% of all Iranian ROP cases and 8.4% of ROPs in need of treatment would be missed (any degree of ROP detection sensitivity: 74.6% and specificity: 70.6%; detection of ROPs in need of treatment sensitivity: 91.6% and specificity: 61.5%).
Based on this guideline, the age at first examination is planned according to the GA at birth, ranging from 9 weeks (63 days) after birth in infants born with GA=22 weeks, to 4 weeks (28 days) after birth in infants born with GA of at least 27 weeks; this has also been recommended by the 2013 American Academy of Ophthalmology Statement (ii,iii, 90).
Implementation of telemedicine in the ophthalmology field, or teleophthalmology as it is called, happens with the help of telecommunication tools.
In another study in 2010, Mousavi et al. compared the occurrence of ROP in two groups of premature neonates; Group A was referred to the ophthalmologist with a single written referral form containing the necessity of eye screening, while group B was given information on ROP and the consequences of late eye examination, along with the date and location of the ophthalmology referral center.
