The depth of the trench with respect to the adjacent abyssal plain reflects the different sedimentation regimes of these three areas: The Kurile-Kamchatka Trench is approximately 3-4 km deeper; the Alëutian Trench is 1-2 km deeper, and the Washington-Oregon Trench does not show notable trench morphology or difference in depth.
Analyses of the microfauna indicate uplift from by the high sedimentation rate while the outer ridge, built by deep water to shallow water conditions.
For instance, benthic foraminifera, single-celled organisms which live within the sediment, indicate the approximate sedimentation depth based on their shell shape and design.
