The word 'thermistor is an acronym from thermally sensitive resistor and was originally given to a solid state electronic component, developed simultaneously in the USA and in Holland during World War II. . hich exhibited a high negative temperature coefficient of electrical resistance, over an extended range of temperature.
Today, thermistor is accepted as a generic name for any device made from a semiconducting material that possesses an electrical conductivity which is highly sensitive to temperature.
The earliest applications of both NTC and PTC thermistors were as temperature sensors where these devices were used as temperature measurement _ or temperature control elements, and even today many millions of these components are manufactured annually for this purpose.
