Today, thermistor is accepted as a generic name for any device made from a semiconducting material that possesses an electrical conductivity which is highly sensitive to temperature. The earliest applications of both NTC and PTC thermistors were as temperature sensors where these devices were used as temperature measurement _ or temperature control elements, and even today many millions of these components are manufactured annually for this purpose.
