(fiqh) sin; sinful act; canonically sinful act; transgression of the law of God N.B. گناه and معصيت have shared meaning elements but the latter is essentially religiously-charged and is said of a breach of religious code whereas گناه is used in a broader sense encompassing both religious and moral elements combined or independently of each other. In light of their shared meaning elements it can safely be said that every معصيت is a گناه whereas the opposite may or may not be true in every instance, and therefore the two are not interchangeable in every context without a slight change of meaning or overtones.
