Cigarettes and stamps, available for purchase at the prison commissary, are the usual forms of currency.
Some of the symbols of control are quite explicit, such as the list of 155 rules that are given to prisoners that cover everything from the 25-cent charge for calls to the commissary (a store in the jail that sells at a profit a variety of items to inmates such as snacks, clothing, and personal hygiene products) to prohibitions against fighting and disorderly conduct.
These feelings are reflected in the following conversation with Jermaine when he was asked about prices in the jail commissary:
Say you order six pack ofjolly Ranchers [from the commissary] and they run out ofjolly Ranchers and only bring you four packs, they still keep their money . . .
For example, if a prisoner does not have someone to send him money to be placed in his spending account, he will not be able to purchase a variety of valued items, particularly food items, from the commissary.
