Annabelle notes that phenomenological researchers often highlight three procedural steps when analyzing descriptive accounts phenomeno logically: First, identifying the phenomenon in which the phenomenologist is interested; second, gathering descriptive accounts of the phenomenon; and, third, carefully studying these accounts with the aim of identifying any underlying com monalities and patterns (Finlay, 2011, pp. 125-138; Seamon, 2000, p. 166).
Whereas many grounded theorists and most phenomenologists typically assume that language is a transparent medium through which "reality" is accurately expressed, researchers involved in discourse analysis argue that language and discourse do not neutrally describe the world but formulate it actively.
Phenomenology A research tradition that describes and interprets human experi ence and consciousness; the phenomenologist examines human actions, meanings, situations, and events with the research aim of locating and clarifying broader expe riential patterns and structures - for example, the significance of place in human life.
More specifically, phenomenologists explore the 'lifeworld' - the world as directly and subjectively experienced in everyday life, as distinguished from the objective physical world of the sciences.
At the core of phenomenological method is a process of intuiting, in which the phenomenologist attempts to be open and to meet the phenomenon in as fresh a way as possible, bracketing out habit- ual ways of perceiving the world.
