The Maltese Hypogeum
, the Maltese began building one of the most remarkable prehistoric monuments, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (underground tomb) located near the Tarxien temple on Malta.
The Hypogeum reproduces a temple underground, since its main hall looks like the facades of aboveground Maltese temples.
Red designs- spirals or vines resembling trees of life, and discs that perhaps depict pomegranates, a symbol of life- decorate the middle-level halls of the Hypogeum.
The Maltese Hypogeum illustrates the communal nature of Old European burial rites.
