The New Testament carries over nearly all these themes about wealth and possessions, except for "one conspicuous omission: never is material wealth promised as a guaranteed reward for either spiritual obedience or simple hard work."22 A preoccupation with food and clothing, and wealth in general, is the most obvious form of distraction from "seeking first" the reign of God (cf. Critiques of both injustice and greed follow from the more fundamental preoccupation with luxury. A consequence is that "the next generation becomes prey to luxuria."56 In this description, over time the initial drive toward accumulation (avarice) leads to a preoccupation with ease, comforts, and the like (luxury).57 Artificiality applies especially to money wealth-hence, the medieval preoccupation with the evil of usury, which is, "by its very nature unlawful," because money is merely a sterile social convention to facilitate exchange.59 This critique of usury remains valuable to us today because it is a reminder that transactions should not go on simply because of an intention for profit. Ordinary wealth, even in provisioning for the future, need not be contrary to charity, but Hervaeus cites numerous limits to possession: excessive care for temporal things to the neglect of God and neighbor; preoccupation with remote possible circumstances; an "inordinate love of acquiring"; and "the elation of the mind" that can be associated with temporal things (65-66).
